CLAIRMONT SUSAG

Came to Havre with his parents in 1914 when he was nine years old.  Worked for 47 years 6 months 15 days for Great Northern. When he started the railroad  they only used coal burning engines. He fired and sometimes ran engine No.2584.  He loved the steam powered engines. He said that he does not miss the railroad, maybe if they still used steam it would be different.  You where  really an engineer when you sat behind a steam engine.  You had to hear and feel the engine was running right.  You can see the same engine down at the BNSF rail yard in Havre.  Also he never hit a person with the train, though many times it was close.  Many time he hit live stock.  One time he went around a Conner and saw a small herd of horses.  He hit everyone some went under the trail and tore the pipes looses.  To learn more about Susag and other important people of Hill county read Grit, Guts and Gusto.  Published By The Hill County Bicentennial Commission.
